The virus known as COVID-19 was discovered in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Its virulent and highly contagious characteristics shocked the world as it quickly propagated and spread to every continent, quickly becoming a global pandemic. The virus’s uncontrollable rate of morbidity and varying range of symptoms made treating the virus difficult

On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced an official name for “coronavirus disease 2019”, abbreviated as COVID-19. The word corona, meaning crown, refers to the appearance that coronaviruses get from the spiked proteins that stick out of them.

Symptoms

Individuals suffering from COVID-19 have reported a wide range of symptoms. Symptoms typically appear 2 – 14 days after exposure to the virus. The most common symptoms are as follows:  

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
